Attorney General William P. Barr appointed J. Thomas Bartleson as an immigration judge in June 2020. Judge Bartleson earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1994 from the University of Washington and a Juris Doctor in 2001 from the University of Montana School of Law. From 2017 to 2020, he served as an assistant U.S. attorney at the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Montana, in Helena, Montana. From 2012 to 2017, he served in the Office of the State Public Defender, Major Crimes Unit, in Helena, Montana. From 2002 to 2012, he served in the U.S. Army and deployed as a judge advocate twice: once as the chief of claims for Multi-National Corps-Iraq/III Corps; and once as a trial defense counsel at Camp Arifjan, Kuwait. During that time, from 2010 to 2011, he served as senior defense counsel at Fort Drum and the U.S. Military Academy. Judge Bartleson is a member of the State Bar of Montana.
